Great American Update – Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

GaNEXT

It’s been about a month since Great American in Liberty closed its doors. Still nothing is happening, nothing. We’ve poked, prodded, and looked under every rock we could find but there is no ‘official’ word on the future of the store. We’ve been unable to reach Garrison Cassevah (current owner ‘Gary’) nor the supposed buyer Butch Resnick for comment. Both remain silent.

Now there are a ton of rumors out there that the deal has fell through and it does look that way from what we can dig up. First and foremost there are no sales pending on the property nor were there any permits filed. Secondly on the rumor wire we’ve heard from several trusted sources that the deal was never finalized.

So what do we have? We have another unused commercial building in Liberty, but this is one that we all used almost daily for our everyday needs. It’s hard to believe that this store that has been serving us for decades could just leave us high and dry.

We use to have a bunch of comments on here, even some dissagreements but still a sense of interest, what can THE INDEPENDENT do to get people to comment again?

I loved shopping there as the food was always fresh and good.  As far as lack of comments, it became more difficult to post since they changed the format.

I had high hopes and was optimistic about another grocery store. Transportation is tough in this area, and I know a lot of people need a walking options on that side of town.

You need to put in a Harris Teeter. They are probably only southern stores, but it would be a big plus for the Village of Liberty. I moved to Charlotte, N.C. and that is a really good store with fresh hot food you can pick up and have for lunch or dinner! I used to shop at Garry’s all the time and he was such a nice person.

Ugh if Butch Resnick bought the place, Liberty is screwed anyway. Lets look at Butch Resnicks past purchases…Rockbar and Area 51….turned into underage drug/drunken orgies and vacant ugly dwellings throughout Sullivan County. This is devastating to see such a well loved piece of history be destroyed right in front of our eyes.

From what i understand, Grossman owed Resnick so much money that Resnick got a lawyer and foreclosed on Mike Grossman’s Tire shop….thats why it sits empty and now is talking with Ideal Snacks to buy the building/property….we’ll have more property with tax exempt statis……

  • Bev

The new owners closed yesterday and it isn’t Resnick.  It will be re-opened in 2 to 3 months.  That is a fact.

  • Chrply

Thanks Bev…that’s good news……do you have a name?  i hope its not ideal snacks….or any tax exempt organization…

Wasn’t Butch Resnick, involved with the Appolo Plaza. He attempted to develop some retail there. As for the suggestion of Harris-Teeter, while I agree, that an retailer would be nice(for me, Wegman’s), the reality is that the population levels would not support that. An independent, like Great American, such as Peck’s, IGA with a full service deli and produce, would be ideal.  Some people have suggested Aldi’s, I think that would be a step backward

any updates on the new owner. i worked there and would love to get in contact with them about getting a job with them.

Who is going to buy in the village??? Taxes drive everybody out!!

  • Real

It’s the town taxes that are screwing the village. What does a village resident get from the town? nothing! And if they did, village residents would be up to their eyeballs in snow, trash, blood, etc. Before the town responds!

  • Hardbody300

I think you have that the other way around its the town people getting screwed not the village people

  • Clueless

any updates on this? ive heard it was sold and will open in something like 2 months. ive also heard they plan on opening soon and renovating while the store is open to make some money.

  • Smurf_mobb
