State Of The Art 2012

A Cadre Of Sullivan County Kids Qualify For State Track Meet Joining The Rest Of Section Nine Elites Heading To Syracuse

By RICHARD A. ROSS

KINGSTON, NY—This is what it’s all about when it comes to being classified as an elite competitor, namely to qualify for states to earn the right to represent one’s school, community and Section and to  vie with the best of the best in New York State.

It’s a privilege only accessible to the top finishers at the state qualifier in Division I (Schools with 600 students or more grades 9-11) and Division II (those with fewer than 600). In addition, one more can make it by dint of having surpassed the state standard in his or her event.

This year the list of state qualifier from Sullivan County burgeoned. Swamped as I am at the moment with preparing for five school slide show presentations with four of them in the coming week, I am not at liberty to write the kind of lengthy tribute these kids so rightfully deserve, but I will before this spring is in the books.

For now I’ll just list their names and events with their times/distances at the state qualifier. I hope to find the time this week to add a photo panel at the top of this piece that depicts each and every one in their events. I’ve got pictures of all of them. Of course I do. That’s a benefit of covering this sport to the extent that I do.

So here they are:

Liberty’s Kane Sauchuck in the 110 hurdles (15.48) and the 400 hurdles (56.25); Eldred’s Hunter Proscia in the 3000 Steeplechase (9:53.64); Sullivan West’s Mitch Paciga in the high jump (5-10); Liberty’s Kenny Jaycox in the long jump (21.7.25); Fallsburg’s Michael Robinson in the triple jump (44-9); Liberty’s Mike Hinton in the discus (143-7); Liberty’s Peter Koval in the javelin which is not a state event (144-5); Fallsburg’s Candhace Forrest in the 100 (13.03); Tri-Valley’s Mareena DiMilia in the 100 hurdles (16.03) and the shot put (34-10); Tri-Valley’s Katlynn Greffrath in the pentathlon (2, 230 points);  Tri-Valley’s Dominique Darby in the  shot put (36-1); Eldred’s Breanna Brucher in the pole vault (10-3).

Tri-Valley’s Jimmy Bernstein missed the state meet by two hundredths of a second in the 1600 but recorded a PR of 4:26.24 which qualifies him for Eastern States. Eldred’s Hunter Proscia missed out in the 3200 by four hundredths of a second.

Special congratulations to Ellenville’s Tyler O’Bryant who won the 100 in 11:06 fighting his way back from a hamstring injury incurred during his win in the 200 at the MHAL championships. O’Bryant had to withdraw from the 200 at the state qualifier to insure that he’d make it in the 100. He is the defending state champion in the 200 and just missed winning the 100 at states last year by the narrowest of margins.
