No shortage of Bakeries in Liberty

No shortage of Bakeries in Liberty

J & K Bakery on North Main Street opened on Saturday – while another bakery plans to open soon in the Liberty Square Mall (next to Cafe Yiasou) called “Bake You Happy”. We’ve seen plenty of Bakeries come and go in Liberty – and I think this brings our total count back up to 4. Good luck to these new businesses, let’s see if they have what it takes. It’s not just about the product, it’s about the people too as proven by Floyd and Bobo’s.

Word on the street is that J&K is De Filippis (Monticello & Middletown), we know their baked goods are excellent. Update: J&K is being opened by the De Filippis cookie baker, and they get their bread from De Filippis. J&K is located on North Main Street next to Lisa’s Luncheonette and the North End Bar.

Around Town: Thunder 102

Around Town: Thunder 102

When I was a kid radio was king in Liberty. Everyone listened to WSUL or WVOS every morning for announcements, contests, school closings, etc… Then came the internet, satellite, and most devastating of them all – the iPod. But – radio is back in Sullivan County! And most importantly it’s based right here in Liberty!

Thunder 102 has been in Liberty since 2005. It’s a Country music station, but even if you don’t like country there is enough variety in their shows and on air personalities to keep you interested. Thunder 102 can be found on 102.1 on the FM ‘dial’, they also stream live over the internet and via mobile apps (we love that – go technology!). They cover everything local and people notice that because every morning you’ll hear everyone from politicians to businessmen on air.

We were given a chance to cover the Ciliberto and Friends morning show. The morning show consists of Paul Ciliberto, Michelle Semerano, and Dr Michelle Koury. The show’s witty banter, local ‘celebrity’ guests, live performances, and the occasional song or two give listeners a variety to keep you interested for the show’s 3 hours of air time. Ciliberto and friends is on from 6am-9am every weekday.

Paul is very involved in the local community. Most recently he was an actor in the Greater Liberty Chamber of Commerces murder mystery dinner show: The Hilarious Hillbilly Massacre. He’s the perfect radio personality – “People tell me I should get in shape” he says, “but I am a shape – round” – it’s this kind of humor that just breaks the ice and makes Paul approachable.

The two Michelle’s round out the morning show with news and local happenings. Dr Michelle Koury is from Crystal Run Healthcare and has a health advice segment on the show. (Dr Koury is a special guest co-host).

They do a great job of keeping the audience involved, especially over twitter and facebook.

I was fortunate enough to be there for a Live performance by local artist Erin Slaver (www.erinslaver.com). She’s a violinist and country pop singer. She’s performed all over locally – but is gleaming because on March 10th she’ll be performing at the Bitter End on New York City’s Bleeker Street. The same club that such greats as Bob Dylan performed at.

Thunder102 is so much more than a radio station – they are a part of our community. Make sure you check them out on air and online. Don’t forget to tune in this coming week to find out who is headlining their Thunderbash event!

Thank you for having us!

We love Liberty Businesses

We decided that our review system could be a little unfair at times. Over one third of our traffic comes from outside of Liberty, we’re a great resource for visitors to find out more about our dining options. So we re-vamped the section to just be ‘Dining’. The new section includes a map of where the establishments are and links to our reviewers experiences.

In the future as we gather more ‘experiences’ at other establishments across the Town of Liberty we’ll segregate them out based on type and location. Thanks!

Phoenix Enterprises and Manza Family Farm donate 14ft Blue Spruce

Phoenix Enterprises and Manza Family Farm have donated a 14ft Blue Spruce to the Town of Liberty. The tree will become the new ‘lighted’ tree for the Christmas Holidays. We spoke to Tom Manza of Manza Family Farm about the donation:

"I feel fortunate over the years to  have the trees  and ability to  help  area communities  with tree donations at times… While my farm is in Montgomery in Orange County ,I have lived in  Sullivan for about half of my life. I have come to  appreciate the outstanding  improvements being made to  Sullivan Towns including Liberty, and it makes me feel good  to contribute in this area. Manza Family Farm is a special place and I’ve been blessed to spend 30 years  of my life  working on it.  Makes me feel good to share  it  in any way  possible."

The tree will be planted after thanksgiving near the Main Street Stage.

Eugene Levich Book Signing Saturday

Can the Liberty Central School District and other Sullivan County districts be reformed into models of excellence for the entire nation — at no extra expense to taxpayers?  Eugene Levich, who taught at Liberty for three decades, believes that they can.  He will discuss and sign copies of his new book, A Teacher’s Odyssey Through the Incompetence of American Public Education: an Exposé and a Solution to the Problem, at the Liberty Public Library on Saturday, November 6th, at 2 P. M.  Come, and learn about a project that has intrigued and energized local school board and faculty members alike!  You will be taking part in an exciting new movement to reverse decades of American educational mediocrity.

We could bore you with a write up of the event – but instead, enjoy some pictures from the show!
