Book Talk & Signing at Liberty Public Library

Book Talk & Signing at Liberty Public Library

Anita Page, a former Liberty resident now living in Orange County, will be reading from her debut crime novel, Damned If You Don’t (L&L Dreamspell) at the Liberty Public Library on Tuesday, May 22nd from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The book features community activist Hannah Fox, daughter of sixties radicals, who battles the power brokers in her Catskill Mountain town when they attempt to seize a friend’s land in a fraudulent eminent domain scheme. When the scheme ends in murder and her friend becomes a suspect, Hannah probes the victim’s past hoping to uncover the killer. As she untangles a web of secrets and lies, she becomes convinced the murder was a heroic act, even when it’s clear she may be the next victim.

Page lived in Sullivan County in the seventies when she worked as a freelance feature writer for the Times Herald-Record. Her short stories have appeared in journals, webzines, and anthologies including Murder New York Style: Fresh Slices (L&L Dreamspell) and the MWA anthology The Prosecution Rests (Little, Brown). She received a Derringer Award from the Short Mystery Fiction Society in 2010 for “‘Twas the Night,” which appeared in The Gift of Murder (Wolfmont Press).

Liberty High School SADD Chapter to host the Second Annual Spring Fling 5k Race/Walk

Liberty High School SADD Chapter to host the Second Annual Spring Fling 5k Race/Walk

Liberty High School SADD Chapter to hold Second Annual Spring Fling 5k Race/Walk

The Liberty High School chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) will hold the Second Annual Spring Fling 5k Race/Walk on Sunday, April 29th at Liberty High School. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race kicks off at 9 a.m.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available for local businesses and individual supporters.

Last year’s first Spring Fling 5k Race/Walk was the brainchild of senior Katie Heinle, who organized the event with her fellow SADD members. At the time, she hoped it would become an annual event, perpetuated each year by her classmates after she graduated.

Now in its second year, the organizational duties have been handed over to Junior Joshua Lieberman, with Katie serving as a mentor and committee member. “That was the plan all along,” she explains. “A current junior would be the chairperson with the previous year’s leader acting as a mentor and a sophomore learning the ropes for the next year. That way, the event can continue and grow.”

This year’s event organization is in full swing, and there are a few changes from last year, including a new race route and differentiated age brackets. The Fun Run for kids 12 and under will take place directly after the 5k instead of during the race as it did last year.

The proceeds of this year’s race will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation, a charity chosen by the entire student body and close to the heart of new chairperson Joshua Lieberman. “My six year old cousin has a rare genetic disease and the Make a Wish Foundation made his wish come true,” he explains.

Last year’s race raised $2,400 and hosted 130 runners/walkers. “We’d like to see over 200 participants this year,” says Lieberman. The entry fee is $10 for students, $15 adults who register in advance and $20 on the day of the event. New sponsorship opportunities are available, including “Sponsor a Student,” which will allow more students to participate who may not have been able to otherwise. There are also opportunities for students needing volunteer credit hours to help out on the day of the race.

For more information, registration form, route map and sponsorship opportunities, contact Joshua Lieberman at springfling5k@libertyk12.org or SADD Student Advisor Sally Forbidussi at sforbidussi@libertyk12.org. Information can also be found at www.libertyk12.org.

Sullivan Nonprofit Summit Announced, March 7th at Bethel Woods

Sullivan Nonprofit Summit Announced, March 7th at Bethel Woods

A committee of regional nonprofit representatives gathered Tuesday afternoon to announce that the 2012 Sullivan Nonprofit Summit will take place on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.

This year’s summit will continue its focus on fostering leadership and collaboration among the region’s rural nonprofits to generate greater impact and support, but will also expand to encourage and acknowledge innovative ideas that have produced practical results, and can be used as a model by other nonprofits in the region and beyond.

Summit host and Bethel Woods CEO Darlene Fedun said, “Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is pleased to host for the second time the Sullivan Nonprofit Summit. As a nonprofit we take seriously our role as a cultural and civic center, where we celebrate the arts and their essential role in creating vibrant and engaged communities. The Summit is an example of our continuing commitment to serve as community convener and catalyst for innovative ways to inspire citizenship and re-vitalize our region.”

The Summit will include educational sessions, including “Building a Strong, Successful Board, “Role of Nonprofits in Revitalizing the Region”, “Pursuing Government Grants,” and a panel discussion with regional professionals. Nonprofit representatives will learn what is really working for nonprofits in the region and for the communities they serve. Speakers will also share stories and models of successful collaborative efforts among rural nonprofits and communities.

Summit Steering Co-Chair Linda C. Hartley of Bethel Woods Center for the Arts and Hartley Consulting, Inc. said, “Through the annual Sullivan Nonprofit Summit we aim to highlight and address in innovative ways the special challenges our regional nonprofits face compared to their metropolitan counterparts. Studies show, for example, that while poverty is more common in rural than in urban areas, large foundations awarding more than $4 million per year gave only $530 million to rural nonprofits in 2009, or 1% of out of the $46 billion awarded by all foundations. By joining forces on creative programs, advocacy and support we can more effectively serve the people and communities of our region.”

The featured lunchtime keynote speaker this year will be Doug Bauer of the Clark Foundation. The Clark Foundation focuses on helping individuals lead independent and productive lives and supports nonprofits and programs in New York City and Cooperstown, NY. Bauer manages not only the Clark Foundation but is also executive director of the Scriven and Fernleigh Foundations. Foundation. Doug’s opinions and ideas on philanthropy have been featured in the Associated Press, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Contribute, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Post, The Wall Street Journal and on NPR and CNBC. Doug co-authored, with Steven Godeke, Philanthropy’s New Passing Gear:Mission Related Investing, A Policy and Implementation Guide for Foundation Trustees. Doug serves on boards or committees for Children’s Health Fund, The Melalucca Foundation and Philanthropy New York (formerly NYRAG).

The afternoon of the Summit will focus on breakout sessions designed to give nonprofits in similar fields the opportunity to meet and develop potential projects for collaboration, and will also include the announcement of the Sullivan Regional Innovation Award by Bethel Woods CEO Darlene Fedun.

Summit Steering Committee Co-Chair Amanda Langseder from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County said, “The Summit is itself, a great example of the power of nonprofit collaboration. Committee members representing nearly a dozen organizations have pulled together to make this year’s Summit a surefire success. The members of the committee meet regularly, giving of their precious time and resources. This year’s event will be a comprehensive day of professional development, leadership training, networking and encouraging messages to all who take pride in working for a nonprofit organization.”

This year’s Summit Steering Committee includes:
