KINGSTON, NY—Over the years when it has come to summing up the Section Nine Class B/C track and field championships I have written volumes. I am an unabashed devotee of track and I make no excuses for my unbridled respect and awe of runners, jumpers and throwers.

That’s not a slight against the panoply of others sports I cover during the school year, just a fact of life. I suppose in some kind of photo/journalistic idealized world I’d have a perfect balance in terms of the weight I give sports. I don’t and I’m not apologizing for it.

That said, I have now reached a new phase of my career and for all of my narrative and expository skills I find I must write far less, if at all. I make my living as a photographer and either my fans will buy my pictures or engage me to shadow athletes for compensation or my tenure in this field will be coming to an end at some point in the not-too-distant future.

I don’t need any more awards or pats on the back to tell me what a great job I do. I need money just like everyone else does and it’s not coming from these storied epic free blogs. So I’m not going to cite chapter and verse about this year’s Class B and C Championships…just drop short notes on what I consider the salient highlights. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves, the nearly 700 of them that inhabit the album on www.sportsinsights.smugmug.com. Buy them and insure that my tireless coverage will continue..view them for free and find another person to do what I do. Good luck in that quest.

Of course nowadays everyone has a digital camera and throws their pictures up on Facebook, but I’m a professional and a darn good one at that. Get your free pix from your cousin Bernie or your mom’s cell phone camera. If you want the kind of stunning freeze frame action of a professional then honor him with your patronage. Nuff said.

There were certainly many individual milestones at this meet in terms of personal bests and records broken but from my standpoint there were two overriding stories. The first was the one centering on Tri-Valley’s girls and their goal to present a seventh consecutive Class C title to their coaches Joe and Missy Iatauro on the occasion of their imminent retirement following decades of unmatched dedication and mentoring of hundreds and hundreds of young men and women.

Mission accomplished on that score as T-V once again used its commanding depth to outpoint competitive Onteora, its closest contender.

The other central story involved the question as to whether the Monticello boys team , arguably its best ever, had enough sprint, jumping and relay strength to offset New Paltz’s commanding distance running talent pool coupled with its ability to garner points in pole vault, pentathlon etc.

Were Monticello to get all it needed from its star athletes in every event and were New Paltz to falter slightly or be beaten back in key point categories by other schools like Port Jervis, Goshen etc, it might have been possible. But it didn’t shake out that way and the Monties who won four consecutive Division III titles went home shy of their ultimate team goal of the season, to win a first ever Section IX title.

One day earlier Eldred’s girls won tier sixth straight Section Nine D crown and the boys claimed their fifth straight in yet another pair of track and field milestones. I’ve never done two days of sectionals in a row because of the impossibility of the workload and so Eldred being a part of the A/D configuration gets my props but none of my photos. I’m always glad to post those contributed by others including those donated by Tom Brucher over the years.

Congratulations to the Yellow Jackets as well as to the other team winners on the two day Section IX tour de force.

Mea Culpa.

THE WORLD OF SECTION NINE—What a week it’s been trying to keep up with the whirlwind of sports. In the course of the past five days I’ve shot close to 2000 photos but haven’t written a word about all of the remarkable things I’ve been privy to. There just isn’t any time to write these days and since my income is totally predicated on my photography, I have just had to sacrifice my love of the written word in order to keep up with the cascade of photos I’ve taken.

The week began at the OCIAA Throwing Pentathlon and Hammer Throw Championships staged at Monroe-Woodbury. Tri-Valley senior Mareena DiMilia who just this week signed her letter of intent to attend Sacred Heart University in Connecticut was the girls victor in the throwing pentathlon. Washingtonville’s Tim Wilson was the boys winner. He also captured the hammer throw championship. Watching the 60 athletes rotate through the shot put, javelin, weight throw, discus and hammer throw was a unique and wonderful experience. I plan on attending it every year from now on.

Results were as follows:

Boys: Wilson posted 3,290 points in the event that included shot put, discus, javelin, weight throw and hammer. He threw the hammer 177 feet, 11 inches. Randy Hinds of Kingston and Aric Boyes of Tri-Valley finished 2-3 in both events.

Hammer: 1. Tim Wilson (Washingtonville) 177-11; 2. Randy Hinds (Kingston) 162-2; 3. Aric Boyes (Tri-Valley) 145-11; 4. Zach Roberts (Tri-Valley) 112-4; 5. Justin Watson (Kingston) 107-6; 6. Mohib Khan (Tri-Valley) 98-0.

Throwing pentathlon: 1. Wilson (Washingtonville) 3,290 points; 2. Hinds (Kingston) 3,276; 3. A. Boyes (Tri-Valley) 3,139; 4. Dave Carlson (Kinston) 2,915; 5. Myles Harris (Kingston) 2,366; 6. Khan (Tri-Valley) 2,212.

Girls: DiMilia won the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association throwing pentathlon in Central Valley. DiMilia amassed 2,429 points in the event that included shot put, discus, javelin, weight throw and hammer.

Denaia Flanders of Monroe-Woodbury won the hammer event at 104 feet, 4 inches.

Hammer: 1. Denaia Flanders (Monroe-Woodbury) 104-4; 2. Rachel Campos (Monroe-Woodbury) 96-2; 3. Abigail Boughton (Kingston) 87-3; 4. Colleen Jones (Tri-Valley) 82-1; 5. Valerie Hinds (Kingston) 80-11; 6. Shannon Smith (Tri-Valley) 78-2.

Throwing pentathlon: 1. Mareena DiMilia (Tri-Valley) 2,429 points; 2. Valerie Hinds (Kingston) 2,352; 3. Abigail Boughton (Kingston) 1,907; 4. Shannon Smith (Tri-Valley) 1,904; 5. Sami Kanterman (Monroe-Woodbury) 1,732; 6. Heather Rysinger (Minisink Valley) 1,724.

On Tuesday it was on to Grossingers for the OCIAA Golf Championships. Eldred Freshman David Powers emerged victorious in the glorious event which acts as a qualifier for the Section Nine tourney with the top 29 and ties advancing to the first round slated for Mansion Ridge. Here are the results:

(at Grossinger Country Club, Liberty, par 71)

David Powers (Eldred) 36-40-76; Ryan Rodriguez (Cornwall) 38-39-77; Sean Ginley (Warwick) 39-40-79; Drew Billard (Sullivan West) 39-42-81; Grant Gadomski (Warwick) 38-43-81; Blake Waaland (Washingtonville) 39-42-81.; Nick Hoffstatter (Kingston) 38-45-83; Justin Pitman (Pine Bush) 42-41-83; Jack Donnellan (Monroe-Woodbury) 41-43-84; Jason Dolney (Goshen) 41-44-85; Matt Biagi (Goshen) 50-36-86; Andrew Barone (Valley Central) 43-44-87; Russ Auth (Warwick) 42-46-88; Mike Friedman (Monroe-Woodbury) 44-44-88; David Gates (Family School) 45-43-88; Nick Miglione (Cornwall) 44-44-88; Bradley Miller (Valley Central) 44-44-88; Nikolai Quigley (Warwick) 43-45-88; Michael Quinn (Port Jervis) 44-44-88; James Purcell (Monroe-Woodbury) 47-41-88; Brendan Riley (James I.
Missed the cut: Jake McManus (Kingston) 46-48-94; James Sullivan (Port Jervis) 47-47-94; Nick Garofalo (Minisink Valley) 46-49-95; Aaron Goyzueta (Goshen) 44-51-95; Pat Morris (Monroe-Woodbury) 47-48-95; Patrick Zimmer (Washingtonville) 49-46-95; Dylan DiGasso (Pine Bush) 43-53-96; Ed Herling (Eldred) 47-49-96; Sami Siddiqui (Newburgh Free Academy) 44-52-96; Justin Starer (Warwick) 43-53-96; Tom Hoerup (Cornwall) 50-48-98; Chris Love (Cornwall) 48-50-98; Tyler Foxwell (Monticello) 46-54-100; Alex Sill (Kingston) 53-47-100; Chris Brighton (Valley Central) 46-56-102; Liam McAleer (Washingtonville) 51-53-104; Oren Bloomhall (Family School) 55-54-109; Stephen Herschel (John S. Burke Catholic) 50-60-110; Dion Lynch (Tri-Valley) 55-55-110.

On Wednesay I ventured to Sullivan West for the Donna Deppa Meet of Champions. The meet is individually scored and features all or nearly all of the Sullivan County schools that field track teams. Eldred was the only team missing in action because of a prior commitment related to another school event already on the docket. It was the swan song for Sullivan West seniors Dani Myers, Hannah Feinman, Olivia Grady, Reed Scott, Eric Haberli, Andrew Siegel, Jonah Bauer, Matt Cardona, Tyler Bernitt, Adam Murphy and Dylan Galligan.

Here are the results: Donna Deppa Meet of Champions at Sullivan West

100 meters: 1. Jackson (Monticello) 11.2; 200: 1. Jackson (Monticello) 22.3; 400: 1. Duncan (Monticello) 52.6; 800: 1. Klein (Monticello) 2:09; 1,600: 1. Reed Scott (Sullivan West) 4:52; 3,200: 1. Reed Scott (Sullivan West) 10:13; 100 hurdles: 1. Rogers (Monticello) 16.2; 400 hurdles: 1. Rogers (Monticello) 61.7; 400 relay: not contested; 1,600 relay: 1. Mitch Paciga (Sullivan West) 6-4; long jump: 1. Alli (Monticello) 19-7.5; triple jump: 1. Alli (Monticello) 40-6; shot put: 1. Rainey (Monticello) 43-4; discus: 1. Anthony Rydell (Sullivan West) 121-5; pole vault: 1. Woolsey (Tri-Valley) 11-6; javelin: 1. Winters Tri-Valley) 150-0.

On Thursday it was on to baseball to take in the final game of the Sullivan West-O’Neill series. The Westies needed a victory in order to qualify for sectionals. It was their last chance to do so. O’Neill need a win for the sweep and the likelihood of earning the top seed in the upcoming Class B Section Nine tourney. O’Neill won 6-4.

Last but not least was my attendance of day two of the OCIAA Track and Field Championships. On Day one Sullivan West’s Reed Scott shocked the world by knocking 16 seconds off his PR in the two mile for a lifetime best time of 9:36.61 less than a second behind leader Jordan Burton of Warwick. Numerous records were shattered and personal bests recorded but my intent was to show the grace, speed and style of the runners, jumpers and throwers in my album of photos and not to cite chapter and verse about the particulars. I leave those to the local newspapers given how little time I have.

Here are the results from Day I followed by Day II

FALLSBURG, NY—How quickly the spring rushes by! It seems like only yesterday that bats, balls and gloves were first being carted out to the fields following another winter that seemed never to end. But this is the nature of spring here, greatly anticipated and gone in a nano-second. Well, not quite yet but surely rushing along far too quickly for those of us who are rushing to try and keep pace.

And so it was that Fallsburg celebrated its senior day on the occasion of its last home game of the season. Athletic Director Tim Bult and Baseball Coach Dave Luczyski were on hand to laud the three seniors who were present along with Josh Carter and Sebastian Sanchez who were not on hand for the ceremony or the game.. Luczyski called forth seniors Austin Halchak and his parents, Ryan McKeon with his parents and Aaron Hornbeck with his girlfriend and buddy Shakree Gibson.

Flowers were presented and photos taken as bemused parents thought about how quickly four years have gone by.

Tri-Valley was just coming off of a spectacular series with S.S. Seward in which the defending Section IX Class C champion Bears took two of three from the Spartans and nearly swept the series. They beat Fallsburg 8-0 the day prior to this encounter and needed this win to secure a sectional berth.

That win came easily as sophomore starter Justin Swarthout pitched masterfully backed up by his team’s solid defense. The Bears scored two runs in the top of the first on an RBI double by Mike Foster. Fallsburg kept it close until the fourth when the Bears began to capitalize on an alarming number of fielding miscues, a walk and a hit batter to accrue three more runs for a 5-0 lead. RBI came from Swarthout, Foster and John Anzano.

Fallsburg had threatened in the third getting on its first two runners but they ran themselves out of the inning on a double play behind some absent minded base running.

T-V added two more in the fifth as McKeon issued back-to-back walks to Jared Nash and Cody Exner. An E-6 plated the first run and a single by Aric Boyes brought in another.

Things went completely south for the Comets in the sixth as they allowed eight consecutive singles to deposit an additional seven runs in the T-V bank account.

Tri-Valley improved to 6-7 (6-5 OCIAA), while winless Fallsburg fell to 0-13 (0-8 OCIAA). Swarthout was three-for-four at the plate and struck out eight batters in his impressive stint on the hill.

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY– I began my journalism career at The River Reporter in September 2002 just after retiring from my 35-year teaching career. I came on board as a writer with sports and youth activities in the area schools as my beat. At small newspapers you have to also be the photographer so I quickly enhanced my skills I had garnered as the yearbook advisor in Livingston Manor to learn the wiles of digital photography.

I’ve come a long way since then in both crafts but my prowess in photography inspired me to start my own enterprise and to leave the newspaper four years ago. I make my living on my pictures though many have come to treasure my writing which of course I still love to do.

The problem these days is time and money. Basically I receive little compensation for my flow of words and the time I put into writing can be immense. So from here on out with the exception of events that are truly major in scope, it’s all photos you’ll see on here. I’m trying out a panel of pictures from my week’s sojourns. Albums of these events that contain the photos I need you to buy are located at www.sportsinsights.smugmug.com.

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY—When it comes to the Monticello Games, unquestionably one of my favorite events of the entire year, I always search through my extensive vocabulary for superlatives to describe the annual milestone which never fails to supersede the glory of bygone years.

So for this 25th Anniversary, once again, I must laud, extol, praise and commend host Monticello, its Athletic Director Doug Murphy, the Monticello coaching staff, the officials, the visiting teams and their coaches and the cadre of enthusiastic onlookers and fans who made this a most memorable day.

True to form the sun was out for the sixth straight year as Murphy’s Law II, which states that the sun will shine on the Monticello Games held true to form once again..a perfect six under the A.D’s watch. And unlike last year, the temperatures were balmy and conducive to the athletes and the fans.

For the Monticello boys team which just clinched its fourth straight Division III title just four days prior, winning this meet was the next step in a season for the ages. On the girls side of the ledger, it was Tri-Valley that stole the show as the Lady Bears continue to provide soon-to-be-retiring coaches Joe and Missy Iatauro with one storied victory after another.

This year’s meet featured 12 teams, down in number from bygone years but still immensely competitive. In addition to Sullivan County entries that included host Monticello, Liberty, Sullivan West, Tri-Valley, Eldred and Livingston Manor, Orange County’s Goshen, Port Jervis and Middletown brought great talent into the mix as did Brewster. Chapel Field was on hand too.

As is usually the case, many of the events had their own unique stories. Monticello’s day was made interesting by the limitations wrought by a hamstring tightening suffered during the Division III clinching meet by Shane Jackson. His contribution would be limited to his anchor leg runs in the 400 and 1600 relays, both of which were won by the Montis.

The 400 relay team tied the school record set last year of 44.1 even with Jackson at 80 percent. That record is bound to fall in the very near future. The 3200 meter run feat ured a down-to-the-wire race as Sullivan West’s Reed Scott who had the lead most of the way was passed in the final lap by Port Jervis’ Kobe Lane and the runner from Brewster. Scott posted a PR of 9:57.1 making the race a gratifying one.

Goshen’s Marisa Robbins wowed the crowd with her 11-4 leap in the pole vault. Sullivan West’s Mitch Paciga won the high jump and the 110 hurdles. A number of t he Westies departed early (as usual) as the meet was scheduled on their Prom Day.

The meet’s outstanding track perfomers included Monticello junior Terry Duncan who won the 200, 400 and ran speedy legs in the 400 and 1600 relays. Tri-Valley freshman Autumn Bender was the female outstanding track performer with her wins in the 800 and 1500.

In field events the outstanding performers were Ellenville’s Jeff Nunez who won the discus and the hammer. Tri-Valley’s Mareena DiMilia continued her storied spring with wins in the shot put, javelin and 100 hurdles.

In the steeplechase, Tri-Valley’s Ally Reynolds prevailed for her first-ever win in the event. Port Jervis’ Hans Zanger was the winner in the boys steeplechase.

Many local athletes achieved Personal Records on the day. Some coaches have provided that information which is listed below. Other coaches are invited to include their as well.

The 4×100 is at 55.1- LaraJane, Sierra, Zoey and Mariah Brickhouse.

The 4×4 (Brenna, Ashley, Sierra and Melissa) and the 4×8 (Brenna, Ariana, Angeles and Alyssa) both took significant time off their previous ones. Sierra, a sophomore, is having a great year.

The 4×100 can also have Ashley Silveman run a leg in some meets and is bringing its time down each time they run.

From Monticello Coach Matt Buddenhagen:

This is the 25th Monticello Games . We wanted to win today. I don’t know if Monticcello has ever won but that was our goal today. The boys came out here and performed just like they have been doing.

They just keep getting better and better. It’s a total team win. We’re stacked in every event with strong Monticello athletes who are competing and working hard and the team title says a lot, especially when our best performer Shane Jackson with a little tightness in his hamstring, to keep him fresh and not let things get worse.

It tells you what kind of team you have when you can rally when your best track and field athlete is probably only 80 percent,” he observed.

Asked about what looms up ahead, Buddenhagen noted: “We’ve got a bunch of invitationals coming up but our goal is to win a Section IX championship. We have the best team in the last four years. We’ve won four straight Division III titles so this is our year. I told the kids we’re working hard and we’re going to get better.

“This is definitely our strongest team,” said Terry Duncan after winning the Outstanding Track Performer honors for his first place in the 200, 400, 400 relay and 1600 relay. “A lot of people have stepped up this year,” he added noting the added asset of Shane Jackson’s choice to run track in lieu of playing baseball.

ROSS rross@sportsinsightsny.com Photos at www.sportsinsights.smugmug.com Editor’s Note: I’m rushing off to NYC today for my daughter’s recital at Juilliard so this is brief but I’ll add to it. Also in deference both to Liberty and Burke as well as all of the girls from the three schools, a separate story on the track meet will follow suit. This one is in celebration of the Montie boys’ remarkable achievement.

A banner day for the fourth year in a row as the Monticello Boys capture their fourth straight Division III Title.

MONTICELLO, NY—They say good things come in threes but in the case of the Monticello boys track team, three was only a prelude to four—four straight Division III track titles that is as the Monties handily beat Liberty to complete their unblemished league season for the fourth year in a row.

Though this year’s title lacked some of the drama of the prior years’ wars against Cornwall which moved up to Division II , wins are wins nonetheless as the streak remains in force. Due to the haste in which I am composing this, I cannot at this moment extol all of the fine performances evinced at this meet and prior ones. I just wanted to be sure that this momentous occasion did not pass unnoticed and I promise to write much more in the coming days including the sum up from coach Matt Buddenhagen on what has fostered this impressive run.

Photos from the meet will continue to upload throughout the morning of April 25 while I’m en route to NYC. Check out the album and the slide show as they continue to fill out at www.sportsinsights.smugmug.com

Congratulations Monties on a job well done!

Again..another story on the meet itself with props to all the outstanding athletes (boys and girls) from Liberty and Burke as well as Monticello will be forthcoming.

OCIAA at Monticello Monticello (4-0) beat Liberty 126-15 and John S. Burke Catholic 115-26. Team scores: Monticello (M) 126, Liberty (L) 15; Liberty 87, John S. Burke Catholic (JSB) 45; Monticello 115, Burke Catholic 26. Individual events: 3,200-meter relay: 1. Monticello (Maroldi, Klein, Forrest, Gil) 9:14.2; 110 high hurdles: 1. Rogers (M) 16.9; 100: 1. M. Alli (M) 11.2; 1,600: 1. Klein (M) 5:12; 400: 1. Jackson (M) 51.5; 400 relay: 1. Monticello (Duncan, Alli, Smith, Jackson) 46.4; 400 intermediate hurdles: 1. Rogers (M) 63.1; discus: 1. Stickle (M) distance unavailable; 200: 1. Duncan (M) 22.2; 800: 1. Gil (M) 2:20.7; triple jump: 1. Przybocki (JSB) 39-113⁄4; 3,200: 1. Foxwell (M) 11:10; long jump: 1. Alli (M) 20-41⁄4; pole vault: 1. Rogers (M) 12-6; high jump: 1. M. Pryzbocki (JSB) 6-0; shot put: Brian Stickle (M) distance not reported. discus: B. Stickle (M) 110-4; 1,600 relay: 1. Monticello (Duncan, Colon, Smith, Jackson) 3:55.

A Fabulous Run

Building a successful track and field program at Monticello has been an ongoing process and each year it’s a matter or reinventing things to find out which athletes fit best in what events. Getting Shane Jackson back this year has provided a big boost for the Monties who are loaded with sprint speed, great jumpers, a fine pole vaulter and a proficiency in throwing. Unlike bygone years when the Panthers were primarily a distance running team, that aspect right now is the team’s thinnest layer.

That said, the Monties will now look to try and win their first-ever Section IX title as they’ll vie against powerful New Paltz in Class B.

As Coach Matt Buddenhagen sees it, this is the year to get it done. “We’ve had a great run. It started four years ago and it was definitely tough when you’re going against Cornwall with their athletic powerhouse. We knocked them off three years in a row and then the re-configuring came along and we didn’t have them this year. But we’ve had a lot of these kids for four years. Dating back to when I got a teaching and coaching job here I’ve had many of them for five years.

We’ve got some talented kids and the kids bought into it. When Coach Seidl and I started this four years ago we wanted to get all the kids out and there is strength in numbers. We’ve seen our numbers rising and rising. We want kids who are doing well in the classroom and doing right in and out of school and who are willing to work hard out here on the track,’ he noted.

“We have about 40-50 kids on the boys modified track team and a lot of them were just here seeing this team getting their picture taken for their fourth title in a row. They see that and alot of them have older brothers on the team and that provides them with role models and hopefully they’ll want to continue in the tradition,” he added looking towards the future.

“Our goal is to win a sectional title. We have the athletes to do it. We’re deep in every event and we have great leadership from our upper classmen and this is the team to do it with,” he added.

The meet featured a number of outstanding performances as you can glean from the results below. Monticello’ senior Mike Rogers was ecstatic with his pole vault leap of 12-6, a personal best.

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY—Given the intense historical baseball relationships between Chester and Tri-Valley , it is logical to assume that each time the two Division V rivals meet that it’s going to be a low scoring affair defined by exceptional pitching and nearly flawless defense.

Going back to last year where the teams had identical 12-3 records with the Bears holding the tie breaker over Chester by dint of winning two of the three regular season games including a 2-1 extra inning nail biter, the rivalry between the Hambletonians and Bears only gets more fierce as time moves on apace.

Last year’s Section Nine semifinal won 1-0 behind Joe Mickelson’s flawless gem left Chester with a hungry heart as the Bears went on to win the Section Nine title. Chester Ace Matt Coffey was matched up against Mickelson in that game as well as the 2-1 regular season thriller. Mickelson, who recorded the 12th perfect game in NYSPHSAA history against Fallsburg graduated in June.

But Coffey is still here and throwing that fierce fastball and nasty curve. And, by the looks of things thus far this season, he may be Chester’s Number Two starter behind Ryan Cabrera who has already thrown a perfect game and a no-hitter.

But in this series opener on April 22, it was Coffey who would garner the Earth Day win despite his team’s uncharacteristically shoddy defense. Pitching six strong innings and allowing only three unearned runs on five hits, Coffey struck out 12 before handing the ball over to Chris Wittekind who closed the deal. Moving behind the plate Coffey was credited with a caught/stealing put out as well.

But the big story of the day was Chester’s offense which took advantage of T-V fielding woes to go along with some sharp hitting to jump out to a 6-0 lead by the time they were retired in their half of the third inning.

The big damage came through in the fifth as they answered T-V’s one and two run third and fourth inning scores with an eight run fifth inning that put the game out of reach en route to the 15-3 win. T-V sophomore hurlers Justin Swarthout and Jared Nash had a tough day at the office but gritted their way through the turmoil. Coach Rusin’s kids never, ever quit. They don’t know the meaning of the word.

Consequently, every Tri-Valley pitch and at-bat and every sign given was treated as if the game’s outcome hinged on them.

Swarthout worked around a walk issued to senior Gio Alfonso to get out of the first inning unscathed. Coffey issued a single to Mike Foster who was then caught stealing to end the Bears’ first. He wouldn’t be the last casualty on the base paths.

Swarthout’s difficulties began in the second inning with a one-out walk to Colin Marco. A balk advanced Marco to second and a passed ball marshaled him to third. A single by Angel Suarez plated the first run of the game which was followed by a stolen base and then a walk to Jeury Lugo to load the bases. An E-2 throwing error plated a run and a single by Alfonso brought in run number three before Cabrera was retired to prevent further damage.

Coffey recorded his third and fourth strike outs of the game in the second before yielding back to back singles to John Anzano and Donovan Flores. The first was a pop up to third that was caught by the wind and came down eluding eighth grade third baseman Marco.

But Coffey got out of the inning without yielding a run as he got Andrew Exner to ground out to second.

Chester liked scoring three runs so much in the second inning that they decided to do it again in the third. Coffey led off with a walk and a passed ball allowed him to move up. A single by Wittekind put runners on the corners before Marco drove in one run with a single.

A two-out single by Jeury Lugo made it 6-0.

Rusin decided to use Jesse Porter as a DH in this series opener. He got on with a lead off single and advanced as the first baseman faked a tag. He came around to score on a single by Swart hout to make it 6-1.

In the fourth inning the Bears got within three as they plated two more runs via RBI singles from Andrew Exner and Rodney Jester. But that would be it for the Bears offense. Meanwhile defensively they helped Chester out immensely, particularly in the eight run fifth. All of those runs were unearned.

Gio Alfaonso was 4-4, Wittekind and Marco each had 3 hits. Jester and Foster each had two hits for Tri-Valley.

Rusin’s take on the game was as follows:

“Chester did a great job putting the ball in play, they exploited every one of our mistakes and Coffey pitched very well.

We did not play the brand of baseball that we are capable of. We can not make the mental and physical mistakes that we made today against any team….but especially not against a team quality of Chester. The good news is that it is a three game series and I am hopeful that we will play the way we are capable in the remaining two games.”

Chester Coach Mike Doucette was upbeat about the win despite his team’s poor defensive performance: “This was not the prettiest win, but we’ll take it. We pride ourselves on good defense, but every once in a while you have to win ugly. Today we won very ugly.

I think it says something about this team when you can gut through a bad defensive day by turning up the offense to get the win. If you want to contend, you have to find different ways to win when things aren’t going your way. Matt Coffey took us on his back in the first half of the game.

The offense did the rest. I don’t expect a repeat performance of the poor defensive play tomorrow or Thursday. Coach Rusin always puts together a good defensive squad and I expect that to be the case for the rest of the week. Chester v. Tri-Valley games have been some of the cleanest games in the league the last few years.

I expect that we will have a great pitching match up tomorrow. Ryan Cabrera has been a welcome boost to the starting rotation. He has a no hitter and a perfect game to his credit so far this season. I know that he will be up to the challenge of facing Tri-Valley’s #1 tomorrow. Our pitching has been our strength so far this season.

Usually, my defense is far ahead of my pitching and hitting, but this year we have learned to pitch to contact and challenge hitters. When you have two starters that have gotten off to the red hot starts the Coffey and Cabrera have, it makes others parts of the game much easier to contend with. You can get away with a bit of a learning curve with the other position players. I expect that we will be tough to beat the rest of the way.”

Iatauro and his wife Missy are retiring at the end of the year and moving to Georgia.

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY—It just wouldn’t be spring without the Tri-Valley Invitational track meet, that storied annual event that has had its share of zany weather throughout the years but more importantly has been a staging area for some of the finest track and field athletes from around the state.

All of which has been due to the tireless efforts of Joe and Missy Iatauro, those iconic Tri-Valley track coaches who seem to have been on the scene since time immemorial. Over the course of their 30 plus years’ tenure the Tri-Valley program has risen to the heights not just in its division and Section IX, but has also landed on the national radar both by dint of the teams’ successes at Mt. Sac in California, Disney in Florida, Penn Relays, Yale and countless other venues.

And that fame has included dynamic efforts in all three seasons of the year: cross-country, indoor and outdoor track.

Tri-Valley is also know for the national collegiate champions who formerly wore the Bears’ uniform including two time Division II hammer champion Ryan Loughney and current college All-American standout Garrett Grey, both of whom got their start of heaving heavy objects at Tri-Valley and went on to storied fame at Ashland University.

The Iatauros’ two children Joe and Heather were also impact athletes who were Section Nine and NYS champions. Joe went on to North Carolina State following in the footsteps of former greats Kristian Agnew, Chip Furman and Kate Landau, while Heather excelled at Princeton.

But over the years there have been legions of young men and women whose raison d’ètre in high school was about evincing excellence..both in the classroom and on the athletic fields where their participation in cross –country, indoor and outdoor track were under the loving, demanding and savvy watch of the two coaches whose dedication defies description.

Much more will be written about the ‘I’s and understandably so as the school year draws to a close and they get ready to transplant themselves to their home in Arrowhead, Georgia. It would be an understatement to declare that their departure will be felt resoundingly at the school that Joe refers to lovingly as “Rinky Dink” Tri-Valley.

At this year’s Tri-Valley Invitational, announcer Ralph Bressler took a moment to honor the Iatauros after asking for a moment of silence for Sandy Bernstein, longtime teacher at Tri-Valley and avid supporter of the Tri-Valley running programs over the years.

This would be the last Tri-Valley Invitational organized and overseen by the Iatauros leaving one to wonder how this event and so much more related to their tireless efforts will fare in their absence.

The bright blue sky was a pleasant change from past monsoons or snowfall. But it was certainly chilly for this time of year. Onlookers hoped for the sun’s intermittent appearances which seemed to raise the temperature noticeably when it chose to show itself from behind the puffy clouds.

But the real story of the day wasn’t the weather or even the Iatauros. It was as always about the athletes hailing from 25 schools and giving their all in the panoply of events staged seamlessly at the various venues , overseen by the excellent timing and judging of officials.

There were far too many outstanding performances to list which is why I am including the results which were recorded to eight places but scored through the first six. As my audience is principally a Sullivan County one, I take this opportunity to extol some of the locals, which by no means lessens the deeds accomplished by athletes from other parts of Section Nine or from the visiting schools that hailed from other Sections across the state.

The most storied honor of the day fell to Tri-Valley senior Mareena DiMilia who was named the Outstanding Female Field Athlete. DiMilia began her day by running the first leg of the winning T-V Shuttle Hurdle relay with teammates Vicky Tingley and Aly Reynolds carrying and extending the lead she gave them. DiMilia went on to place second in the shot put (32-3 ¾), and second in the hammer throw (123-10). She took first in the javelin (115-4).

T-V freshman Autumn Bender was another big winner for the Lady Bears with her victory in the freshman 800 (2:35) as she edged out Sullivan West up and coming speedster Courtney Meyerer who would later team up with Erin Sumfleth, Megan Robisch and Rosa Martinez, to win the F/S 1600 relay (4:36.8). Bender went on to win the 2000 steeplechase (7:51.6). She took second in the F/S 1500 (5:20.8).

T-V junior Katlynn Greffrath won the long jump (14-10) and the high jump (4-9). Monticello’s Jordan Fredell won the triple jump (31-0). As you look over the results posted below you will also note many other Sullivan County athletes who placed in their events. Sullivan West’s Hannah Feinman was second in the long jump (14-4) and in the triple jump (38-4). Fallsburg’s Kali Seastrand took second in the F/S long jump (13-9). Tri-Valley’s Caroline Martin was third int the event (13-9) while Fallsburg’s Kassie Foertschb was fourth (13-7). Tri-Valley’s Mary Alongi was second in the non-scoring 1500 racewalk (8:33). Fallsburg’s Nyasia Harris was third in the F/S shot put with a heave of 27-10 1/2). Tri-Valley’s Colleen Jones was third in the discus (98-8).

On the boys side of the ledger Monticello’s Shane Jackson won the 100 in 11.0. He took third in the 200 and ran a leg in Monticello’s second place 400 relay team which was edged out by Middletown. Tri-Valley recorded a one-two-three sweep in the javelin with Josh Winters (136-11), Aric Boyes (126-11) and Mohib Khan (115-5). Boyes won the hammer throw (143-5) and the shot put (48-1. Sullivan West’s Anthony Rydell was victorious in the discus (118-0). Tri-Valley’s Aidan Woolsey won the pole vault (11-6) while Monticello’s Mike Rogers came in second in the event (11-0). Monticello’s Terry Duncan settled for second in the 200 behind Arlington’s Trenton Beram. Duncan was two seconds back of Beram’s 51.4. Monticello’s Kyle Haynes took second in the F/S long jump (17 ½). Sullivan West’s Mitch Paciga took third in the high jump 5-10

As noted for complete results, see the charts below. Having to leave the meet later in the day but before its dramatic conclusion my photos don’t include the final events of the day nor the awarding of the meet’s outstanding athletes which in addition to Mareena DiMilia included Arlington’s Bella Burta and Sebastian Hanson as Outstanding Track Athletes and Middletown’s C.J. Clark as Outstanding Field Athlete.

MONGAUP VALLEY, NY—One thing was for certain as Sullivan West warmed up to prepare to take on Monticello on a bright April 18: By day’s end one of these two teams was going to break into the win column for the first time this season.

And you could tell from the body language of both squads that each was expecting it to be them.

For the Lady Monties who were 0-3 that included being winless against league rivals Cornwall and Goshen, as well as the Lady Bulldogs who had already been dealt back to back league losses by O’Neill and Burke, the urgency of getting that first win of the season has been mounting.

Early season losses can easily be rectified by a nice turn of events but until that happens, the frustration for both the team and the coaching staff is real despite all of the positive spin about what goes right in losing efforts.

As the season moves along teams invariably improve . But if you want to make it to sectionals, a primary goal for all teams starting out of the gate, it starts with good pitching and solid defense. For Monticello, the latter has been the problem up to now and that is hardly given the fact that there are eight sophomores on the team.

When it comes to an understanding of what it takes to win in softball, I can think of few people with a better grasp of those dynamics than Lady Panther Coach Shannon Dietrich. It’s one thing to understand the game in terms of it’s x’s and o’s. Many coaches have ample knowledge based on clinics and observation. But to have played the game as well as Dietrich has and still does, that’s another matter.

Her young charges know how good she is and they respect her. She teaches by example and though her team is young, with the group she’s got now, Monticello is going to be a force to be reckoned with in a couple of years. You can take that to the bank.

The pitching matchup for this game was a good one as Dietrich sent Morgan Halloran to the mound to face off against Sullivan West’s Katie Slater. The Lady Bulldogs plated a run in the top of the first as Bethany Padu led off with a single, stole second, moved up on a passed ball and came in on an RBI single from Slater who would go on to evince a two-for-three performance from the plate.

Halloran limited the damage by inducing a ground out to first from Dana Borowski and the Lady Panthers hustled in to see if they could even the score. They did just that working around a pair of strike outs as Essence Gonzalez broke through for a single and scored on an RBI double by Brittany Stein.

But any thoughts of a tight nail biting game were blown away by Sullivan West’s rapacious second inning wherein they scored five runs. Senior Katie Taylor led off with a single. Kelsey Brockner got aboard on an infield single before Halloran plunked Carly Grishaber to load the bases. An E-3 brought in one run and a walk to Victoria Haas loaded the bases again.

Marianne Durkin drove in the second run of the inning with a single and Slater knocked in two more with her second single of the day. When the dust settled it was Sullvan West led 6-1 and they’d never look back.

Monticello added a run in the third inning on an RBI single from Gonzalez but the Lady Bulldogs answerd right back in the fourth as they capitalized on a pair of throwing errors and a walk. The eighth run came in the sixth inning via an RBI single from Borowski.

Sullivan West improved to 1-3, while Monticello slipped to 0-4.

Dietrich summed up the things that need work. “We’re not executing the fundamentals. We’re not getting it done right now. It’s coming. We’ve made progress for sure but there’s a lot more progress to be made,” she noted.

“I thought Morgan did much better later in the game. Early on she had a few walks, gave up a couple of hits with runners in scoring position. She got into a couple of 0-2 counts and made a couple of mistakes. Essence Gonzalez is a leader on the team and she’s only a sophomore. She’s a ball players. She always puts the bat on the ball. It’s day to day with us. Every day they come out and practice hard. A lot of these girls played J.V last year and didn’t win a game.”

“I’ve got the right girls. We’re going to get it,” said Dietrich whose upbeat but demanding demeanor will transform her newbies into veterans sooner than later.

No doubt it will be a big confidence booster when they get that first “W.”

Sullivan West Coach Mike Ellmauer was glad his team got over that hurdle. “I’m glad to get that monkey off our back. We felt bad when we lost a game we shouldn’t have lost against Burke. But we’re still staying positive and we’re still a work in progress. We have to work on the mental aspects of the game. Katie Slater did a really nice job today moving the ball around. She and Katie Taylor are starting to mix and match.

Liberty is coming up and that game is big given the two league losses already in the books.
